Bad Religion/Against Me!/Dave Hause - Live at Jannus, St. Petersburg, FL (13/10/2016)

Не съм писал репортаж за концерт от доста време, а и трябва да призная, че не съм бил на голямо музикално събитие от повече от година. Затова когато видях възможността да слушам на живо една от любимите ми банди - Bad Religion, нямаше как да пропусна. Още повече, че с тях щяха да свирят и Against Me!, които в последните се превърнаха в едно от водещите имена на пънк сцената и през този месец дори писах ревю за най-новия им албум Shape Shift With Me.
Концертът се проведе на доста интересна локация в центъра на Сейнт Питърсбърг. Мястото Jannus Live мога да опиша като някаква американска индустриална версия на "Маймунарника" в София - открито пространство, заобградено отвсякъде от барове и жилищни кооперации (ако съдя по думите на Грег Графин, който се зачуди как спят тия хора). Разбира се, за разлика от българския бар, дърветата тук бяха по-малко и нямаше скара с кебапчета и кюфтета, duh. За съжаление не направих никакви снимки на Jannus Live или на шоуто, за да покажа, но пък веднага си купих тениска на Bad Religion за $20 и бира за $8.
Преди хедлайнерите на турнето Vox Populi, кратък съпортващ сет направи Dave Hause (а не Слави Трифонов), който иначе фронтмен на The Loved Ones и отскоро член на The Falcon и The All Brights, за които писах. Не съм запознат със соло кариерата му, но той се появи на сцената с брат си Тим, който обра бая овации, особено от женската част на публиката. Фолк/рок сетът на Дейв завърши с две песни с пълнокръвна група, в която се включиха барабанистът на Against Me! - Атом Уилард и басистът на Bad Religion - Джей Бентли. Едното от парчетата беше "поздрав" към Доналд Тръмп, а измежду песните си Хаус се скара на някакъв пияница, които явно му крещеше нещо да се маха. "Ще ме изтърпиш още 10 минути, не разваляй кефа на останалите хора тук", тактично го затапи музикантът.
Докато чаках Against Me! да почнат, трябваше да отида до тоалетната (цената от 8 долара за бира не ме спря да си купя повече от едно кенче). Естествено, тоалетните в Jannus Live не са селски кенефи като в Маймунарника, а супер цивилизовани и вътре дори имаше човек, който ти цръква сапунче, после ти дава хавлия да се избършеш... Супер странно и неудобно предвид факта, че това е пънк концерт, а аз просто исках да се изпикая, a не да давам бакшиш на някого заради сапун, за какъвто дори не съм питал. До мен на чешмите някакъв тип, който беше един от много, които ми казаха колко е яка тениската ми на Lagwagon, каза на работника от тоалетната, че "не иска да го помисли за скръндзав задник, но няма никакъв кеш в себе си" (какъвто нямах и аз), а отговорът на човека със сапуна беше "О, ние приемаме и кредитни карти" и извади някакъв таблет. Беше супер "Уооу WTF".
Но стига отклонения от темата. Половин час след Дейв Хаус, дойде време и Against Me!. Както казах, наскоро групата на Лора Джейн Грейс издаде нов албум и логично в сетлистата бяха застъпени доста парчета от него - Rebecca, 333, Crash, Haunting, Haunted, Haunts... Иначе Against Me! стартираха с две класически парчета от периода, когато Лора все още се казваше Том Габел - I Was A Teenage Anarchist (от албума White Crosses) и Tonight, We're Gonna Give It 35% (от The Disco Before The Breakdown EP).
Честно казано, докато свириха Against Me!, ми се стори, че вокалите са някак неясни, но си помислих, че това е защото, звукът нарочно е намален, за да се различава от баш хедлайнерите на вечерта. Иначе бандата свири доста стегнато, Лора почти не говори между песните, а като цяло сред останалата част от сета имаше няколко песни от Transgender Dysphoria Blues, включително финалното Black Me Out, което бе последвано от нещо като бис - Sink, Florida, Sink - доста тематично не само, защото концертът е във Флорида, а и защото бе част от компилацията Rock Against Bush и сега напълно се вписва в президентската борба между Тръмп и Хилари.
След последния албум на Bad Religion - True North, бандата претърпя промени - китаристът Грег Хетсън и барабанистът Брукс Уокърман напуснаха и бяха заменени от Майк Димкич (екс-The Cult) и Джейми Милър (Snot и ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead). Мистър Брет Гуревиц пък постоянно върти бизнес с Epitaph Records и изобщо не ходи по турнета, но пък Грег Графин, Джей Бентли и Брайън Бейкър бяха на линия и изглеждаха доста енергични на сцената.
Bad Religion свириха много. И малко. Като погледнете почти 30-песенния им сетлист (и нито един кавър), ще си помислите, че това е цяла вечност, но бандата включи един от куп своите 1-2-минутни скоростни откоси като You Are (The Government), Suffer, Do What You Want, 52 Seconds, Change Of Ideas и други, които оставиха без дъх публиката.
Усещането, че вокалите не се чуваха толкова добре остана и при Bad Religion, което обаче не развали кефа ми от концерта. Бандата, която има гигантска дискография направи обширна разходка и свири парчета от почти всеки един свой албум, включително и гигантски хитове като 21st Century Digital Boy и American Jesus, направи и няколко изненади за мен - The Streets Of America и The New America, но явно политическият сезон ги докара отново на мода.
Сред големите бисери на вечерта бяха изпълненията на фенски фаворити като Let Them Eat War и I Want To Conquer The World и появяването на Лора от Against Me! на сцената за Television (която в студийната си версия е с Тим Армстронг от Rancid). Когато Bad Religion се прибраха, никой не скандираше за бис, но явно в САЩ нравите са други - всички знаеха отлично какво ги очаква така или иначе. И бандата се завърна да сцепи с още два от големите си хитове - Sorrow и Infected и накрая да сложи край на вечерта с Fuck Armageddon... This Is Hell - песен, която е записана преди повече от 34 години, но все още звучи актуално.
I haven't written an article about a live concert in a while and I must admit it's because I haven't been to a big music event for more than one year. So when I saw the opportunity to listen live one of my favorite bands - Bad Religion, there was no way I could miss it. Also along with them the other band on the bill was Against Me! - who made themselves a leading name in the punk scene and earlier this month I even wrote a review about their newest record "Shape Shift With Me".
The show was supposed to take place at very interesting location in the downtown of St. Petersburg, FL. The venue "Jannus Live" looked like an American industrial version of the "Monkey House" in Sofia - open air space, surrounded by bars and buildings (where evidently people live if we can trust the words of Greg Graffin, who was wondering if anyone can sleep with all the noise). Of course, there weren't that many trees like in the Bulgarian bar and there was no BBQ, duh. Unfortunately I didn't take any pictures of the venue (or during the show) but the first thing I did there was buy a t-shirt from the Bad Religion merch guy for $20 and a beer for $8.
Before the the headliners of the Vox Populi Tour there was a short supporting set by Dave Hause, also known as the frontman of The Loved Ones, and a member of two other bands - The Falcon and The All Brights - both of them I have reviewed here. To be honest I'm not really familiar with his solo stuff but he showed up at the stage with his younger brother Tim, who was warmly welcomed especially by the female part of the audience. Dave's folk/rock set came to an end with two songs which were performed by a full-fledged band after the drummer Atom Willard (Against Me!) and the bassist Jay Bentley (Bad Religion) took the stage to give him a hand. One of the tracks was "a greeting" to Donald Trump. By the way, during his set Dave called out some wasted guy in the public who apparently was yelling at the musician "to get off the stage" or something. Hause remained calm though "You can wait for another 10 minutes, buddy! Don't spoil the show for the rest of the audience".
While I was waiting for Against Me! to start, I had to go to the restroom (the price of the beer $8 didn't stop me from getting more than one). Of course, the restrooms here were nothing like the shitholes in the "Monkey House", they were super civilized and there was also a toilet attendant - a guy who helps you with soap and a towel. I thought it was weird because it's a fucking punk show and I just wanted to take a leak and I didn't want to tip somebody for giving me fucking soap I never asked for. While I was washing hands, some guy who admired my Lagwagon t-shirt told the toilet attendant: "I don't want you to think I'm a cheap ass but I have no cash with me right now" (I didn't have cash either). The toilet attendant responded "Oh, we also take credit cards" and pulled out some tablet and then I was like "Wooow, WTF?!?".
But let's get back to the show. Around half an hour after Dave Hause, it was time for Against Me! to hit the stage. Like I said the band has a new album and the setlist was full of songs from "Shape Shift With Me" - "Rebecca", "333", "Crash", "Haunting, Haunted, Haunts'... Anyways, Against Me! started their concert with two classic songs from the times when Laura Jane Grace was still a man called Tom Gabel - "I Was A Teenage Anarchist" (from the the album "White Crosses") and Tonight, We're Gonna Give It 35% (from "The Disco Before The Breakdown" EP).
To be honest, during Against Me!'s set, I thought the the vocals are kind of unclear but I decided that it's because the volume wasn't too high so the sound of the the headliners would be more powerful. The band was really tight though. Laura didn't talk a lot between the songs and their setlist also had a few tracks of their completely brilliant record "Transgender Dysphoria Blues" including the final "Black Me Out" which was followed by something like an encore - "Sink, Florida, Sink" - which was thematic not only because the show was in Florida but also because the song was a part of "Rock Against Bush" compilation and now again fits perfectly to US presidential campaigns.
After Bad Religion released latest album True North (2013), there were some changes in the band. One of the guitarists Greg Hetson and the drummer Brooks Wackerman left and they were replaced by Mike Dimkich (ex-The Cult) and Jamie Miller (who plays with Snot and ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead). Mr. Brett doesn't bother to show up at tours anymore because he is a businessman and has a big label to take care of. Greg Graffin, Jay Bentley and Brian Baker were there though and they looked fresh and energetic on stage.
Bad Religion played a lot. But not enough as well. If you look at their set - there were almost 30 songs on it (and not a single cover), which looks like eternity but the band had plenty of those under one and two minutes shotgun blasts like "You Are (The Government)", "Suffer", "Do What You Want", "52 Seconds", and "Change Of Ideas". As you can guess, these short fire shots left the audience breathless.
That feeling that the vocals were unclear didn't leave me while Bad Religion was playing, which wasn't cool, but it didn't spoil my enjoyment. The band has such a huge discography and played songs from almost all of their albums, including their biggest hits "21st Century (Digital Boy)" and "American Jesus". Bad Religion also had some surprising (at least for me) tracks like "The Streets Of America" and "The New America" but I guess the political season brought them back for the tour.
Among the highlights of the night were some of the fan favorite performances like "Let Them Eat War" and "I Want To Conquer The World", and Laura Jane's guest appearance for the song "Television" (the studio version is with Tim Armstrong from Rancid). When Bad Religion finished their set, there weren't any shouts like "Encore" or "Bad Religion, Bad Religion" but probably because in the USA everybody knows exactly what to expect from a show. And the band took the stage again with two more of the big hits - "Infected" and "Sorrow". Then, in the very end, they played "Fuck Armageddon... This Is Hell" - a song that is more than 34 years old but still sounds relevant after all this time.
